Hello, e-ink

kindle.aijly.com  |  plain HTML 4, no scripts, no images, no web fonts

This page is built to survive an old browser. If you can read this on the e-ink screen, the connection and the rendering both work. Nothing here needs JavaScript, CSS3, flexbox or a web font.

Download

Download the Kindle book A Short Book About E-ink · 81 KB · sample.mobi

Tap the button and the browser should ask to save the file rather than display it. That is the test: the server sends it as an attachment, with the type application/x-mobipocket-ebook.

The book is also here as sample.azw and sample.prc — the same bytes under all three names, because a Kindle takes any of them.

Tests

Storage probe what this browser can remember · runs JavaScript Offline test does it keep a page when the wireless is off · runs JavaScript Cache test a page the browser is allowed to keep · runs JavaScript

These three are instruments rather than part of the site: they run JavaScript on purpose, so that the browser can print its own answers on the e-ink screen where there is no other way to read them. The rest of these pages use no scripts at all.

What should render

ItemExpected
Paragraph textWraps to the screen, no sideways scroll
This tableSolid rules, black on white
Buttons aboveBoxed, big enough for a fingertip
Rule aboveA solid black line

Small print

Bold, italic, lists and a code block are on page two. Any grey you see here is the e-ink panel's own dithering, not this page: every colour used is pure black on pure white.
